Running a business has the potential of being a fulfilling and rewarding endeavor.

Being able to get up daily, go at it, and give it your all. However, it is very common for business owners to get so enveloped in their business, that it begins to take a toll on them.

This is the case for many sole proprietors most especially, considering the fact that they are solely responsible for the success or failure of the business, and they solely bear liability.

As an entrepreneur, it is easy to unconsciously neglect your health. It is easy to focus all one’s energy on achieving the growth of the business, such that one’s own self is not paid attention to.

Most often, when we talk about looking after your health, the first thought is usually physical health: eating right, checking your blood pressure and monitoring your cholesterol. Meanwhile, mental health is just as important and should be paid attention to.

Business owners encounter various challenges that can have adverse effects on their mental health.

Some of these are:

Managing multiple assignments and roles at the same time.

Most small business owners oversee so many areas of their business, from administration to procurement and production, all at the same time. This can take a toll, especially at the starting stage of the business when there are not enough staff hands.

Working long hours.

It is not uncommon for business owners to work long hours at work and still take some of that work home, totally removing the balance between work and life.

Experiencing low business.

Low business times can be devastating for any business and can mentally affect the business owner who bears liability for losses.

When the demands of work or running a business become greater than one’s capacity to manage them and become overwhelming, our human response to that is stress. This is called work-related stress.

Some early signs that your work might be taking a toll on your mental health are:

· You feel constantly fatigued without having necessarily exerted yourself physically.

· You find yourself getting unusually- mostly spontaneously- tearful or emotional.

· You have difficulty concentrating or making important decisions.

· You get easily frustrated.

Just as we get medical help for our physical ailments, it is important to monitor our mental health alongside, in order to adequately take care of ourselves.

When you have a headache with other symptoms of a major illness, you get tested and get treated; the same applies to your mental health. It is important to get help from a professional when you feel like your mental health might be at stake.

It’s no use being physically strong but mentally drained.
