AMG Logistics Update: NPA compels shipping companies provide holding bay for empties
Ahead of the electronic call-up scheme for trucks scheduled to begin on 27 February, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) announced that shipping firms would supply empty container holding bays with 65 percent of the freight volumes they are carrying in to stem the tide of empty containers filled by the harbour access roads.
NPA Managing Director Hadiza Bala, who announced this at a virtual interactive meeting with maritime correspondents in Lagos on Monday, said that complying with the empty container policy will, in the future, be one of the conditions for the annual validation of shipping lines authorised to call Nigerian ports.
“We have instructed every shipping firm to have 65 percent of the amount of freight they carry in their container holding bays.
She said that the authority also empowered officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LATSMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enforce any unregulated parking truck on the roads in Apapa on 27 February.
On export freight, it disclosed that Lilypond will act as an export processing terminal where exporters would be expected to aggregate their cargo and have space to complete the necessary paperwork before transferring the cargo to the port.
