AMG Logistics Update: NEPZA to launch Medical Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Nigeria
NEPZA says negotiations are underway to create the first fully equipped and functional Medical Special Economic Zone in Nigeria.
Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has announced plans to establish Nigeria’s first Medical Special Economic Zone in partnership with stakeholders (MSEZ).
This was announced by NEPZA President Prof. Adesoji Adesugba at a meeting with the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Trade, Manufacturing, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) in Abuja on Wednesday.
The NEPZA Leader announced that the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos State had been set up to create a fitted and functional Medical Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Nigeria, citing that, when completely introduced, it will provide world-class healthcare services and minimize medical tourism for Nigerians.
He added that the impact of the pandemic on Nigeria’s healthcare sector was a stimulus for the Medical Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) as the FG had to reassess how to create more resources in health care.
“The MSEZ seeks to reduce Nigeria’s medical tourism, revitalize health services, build jobs and preserve foreign exchange.
“If approved, the project will be carried out in cooperation with the State Government of Lagos (LASG) and the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH).
“Discussions are already ongoing with high-level stakeholders and potential investors on the implementation arrangements for the region, which have met with a big positive response,” Adesugba said.

Nairametrics announced on November 2020 that NEPZA thoughtfully proposed setting up 15 medical free zones in at least 15 states of the federation that would save Nigeria over $1 billion in annual medical tourism, not to mention the torrential pressure exerted by state governments to move the site of the current medical free zones to their own states.
“The leverage exercised by these governments indicates that the proposal is reasonable on the grounds of its feasibility. NEPZA is also considering whether the project can be situated in more than one state,” said the NEPZA Leader.
